Buteyko Breathing Method - 30 Day Challenge Week 2

If you've come straight to this page read this Buteyko Method Introduction first

Week 1 of the Buteyko Method Challenge didn't turn out quite as I'd planned...

I started

A few days later I developed a sore throat and fever - and felt exhausted. At this stage I wasn't sure if this was good or bad news! It could be

Cleansing symptoms might be unpleasant. But they would mean I was making good progress. While a cold would not.

Cleansing symptoms usually crop up at fairly regular intervals as your Control Pause rises. The most common?

  • more frequent bowel motions
  • sore throat, fever
  • greasy skin
  • mood changes

For most Buteyko students these pass within a few days - as the Control Pause rises. You're then expected to feel better! More energetic and healthier. Until you hit the next bout of cleansing symptoms.

A lot of students get symptoms with a Control Pause of 20, 30 and 40 seconds. After which things should settle down. My Control Pause was 24s - which made me suspect I might have a cold ...

What I Did

I relaxed my training a little - changing to

  • Mini pauses - that's a breath hold 5 to 10 seconds longer than my Control Pause.
  • And reducing my physical exercise.
With this regime I got through week 1 in once piece! - with a Control Pause of 24.

Now for Week 2 ...

Buteyko Breathing Week 2

By this stage my cold symptoms had gone. With my Control Pause still around only 24.I decided to intensify my training.

What I Planned to Do

Breathing Exercises

I had planned to stop mini-pauses and return to resistance breathing -using Artour Rakimov's device - when my cold symptoms settled. But I decided to stick with the mini pauses. Why?

  • I can easily fit them into my day.
  • I can maintain air hunger throughout more of the day.

Physical Exercise

I continued with exercise as before with this condition ....

It must be all about the breathing!

In other words I would concentrate on maintaining air hunger at all times. This might mean I ran more slowly - so I could focus on controlling my breath.

Diet and Sleep

No change here. Still a mostly vegan diet and less sleep.

How Did I get On?

Control Pause

Wow - a big increase in my Control Pause. Ending the week at around 35 seconds.

Energy

I'm sleeping less -but there's an obvious increase in energy.

Mood

I've had a few unpredictable mood swings. But the overall trend? Most of the time its up..

Cleansing Symptoms

None in the last few days

Meditation

I've mentioned a Buddhist monk's experience with Buteyko before. But I think it's early days yet for me to report on meditation effects. They usually come with a Control Pause in the 40's. But check out the next Buteyko Challenge Week 3 and 4 for more on this....
