Downward Dog

A novice to the wonderful world of yoga I am currently very fond of the downward dog pose. As explained by my yoga instructor, the pose received its name because it closely resembles a dog stretching.
I found this to be very interesting. I enjoy the downward dog pose for several different reasons.
First and foremost I like the strength building element that this pose gives my arms, shoulders, and wrists. Secondly, I enjoy the fact that this pose is used as a resting position in between more difficult poses. I often use this time to center my mind along with my body. This allows me to focus more during the more difficult poses. Thirdly, I also enjoy that this pose stretches my entire leg from my thighs to my calves.
In order to do this pose correctly one must ensure that both feet are together and flat. Slowly bend over and place both hands shoulder length apart, on the floor. At this point your butt should be sticking out and your body should be at a 45 degree angle.
To receive the maximum benefit from this pose, make sure your back is completely straight. You will know if you are doing the pose right if you feel it in your shoulders and legs.
