Downward Facing Dog

My favorite yoga pose is the Downward Facing Dog or Adho Mukha Svanasana. It is a great pose to stretch your entire body. It’s rejuvenating and not at all strenuous. Even if you’ve never attended a yoga class you’ve probably heard of this pose.

During a yoga class this pose is done many times. Downward Facing Dog is a great strengthening pose on its own. But it’s also a resting pose, and a transitional pose. It’s one of the easier yoga positions. Almost anyone can do it.

Downward Facing Dog - How to Do it

To do the Downward Facing Dog get on your hands and knees. Position your wrists under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Next curl your toes under and push your hips up and straighten your legs. Spread your fingers and push down from your forearms.

Next rotate your upper arms. Let your head hang down and rotate your shoulder blades towards your hips. Rotate your thighs in and keep your bottom high. Press your heels into the floor. The distance between your hands and feet should stay the same. If you’re a beginner try bending your knees, also try bending the arms slightly out to the side.
