How to Practice Mindfulness Meditation

The 4 Best Books

1. Mindfulness in Plain English

Bhante Henepola Gunarantana

Are you looking for a down to earth guide to easy meditation ? Then this is the book for you. Yes ....it is written in plain English.

It's a how to practice mindfulness book. So there's no theory. And it focuses on breathing meditation alone. Good if you're a beginner.

Want to get your meditation posture right? There's as section on this, as well as common problems and walking meditation .

Any faults? This really is an excellent practical guide. But it's less gentle that the Jon Kabat-Zinn books. So it seems judgemental at times. But overall.... Yes I recommend it!

2. The Power of Now

Ekhart Tolle

Ok ....... so this isn't a how to book on mindfulness meditation.

But it's invaluable for getting your attitude right.

These are the 3 most important topics he covers:

  • You are not your Mind
  • Moving into the Now
  • The Meaning of Surrender

Are you struggling with your meditation? This will help you. Especially the chapter on surrender. I've explained how you can use surrender to change your meditation in Easy Meditation Attitudes.

The only word ofwarning? You might think some of the language is a bi far out. But stick with it. It's well worth it.

3. Buddhism Plain and Simple

Steve Hagan

Don't let the title put you off. Its not just for Buddhists. Again its not a how to guide. But it very clearly explains why........And if you do want to know more about Budhism. You couldn't find a more concise, clear book.

My only critism? Well its not really a critism. Some of the ideas here are challenging. I don't mean hard to understand, but maybe hard to accept....

Oh and check out the puzzle on page 28..... It took me hours to see it!

4. Happiness A guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill

Mathieu Ricard

Is happiness a skill? Can meditation make you happy?

Matthieu Ricard thinks so. He's a Buddhist Monk who's spent over 10,000 hours meditating..... the media call him "the happiest man in the world".

What does this mean for you? How can you manage 10,000hrs?

Well.......you'll be relieved to hear you don't have to! A little goes a long way says Ricard. We don't have to be Olympic meditators to get some benefit.
