3 Reasons You Should Sit Upright

What's the best Meditation Posture?

Should you meditate in a chair, kneel or sit in the lotus position? Why does your posture matter anyway?

Whatever position you chose the most important thing?.....sit upright with a straight back. Your mind will be calm. You'll be more settled and less stressed.

Here's why......

3 Reasons You Should Sit Upright

You'll Breathe Better

There's a close link between your mind and breath. So how you breathe has a big effect on your meditation. Sit with a hunched back and your breathing will suffer. It will likely be erratic, uneven and fast.

This really does change your state of mind during meditation. You'll feel more unsettled. They'll be more irrational fear and anxiety....and not much peace and relaxation.

So I find it's best to sit upright. But, as my old meditation teacher used to say, not ram-rod rigid! This will allow the breath to move easily in and out of your lungs. Ideally it should become soft and light..... so you hardly notice it.

You'll be more alert

Its easy to fall asleep when you meditate. Sometimes that's ok. Maybe you're tired and need to sleep..... But if you're always drowsy you're not getting the most from the easy meditation techniques.

What can you do? First check your posture. Whatever your position- have a straight back. Upright but....... you guessed it not ram-rod rigid! This will help your mind stay fresh and awake.

If you're still drowsy be sure to check Easy Meditation Technique FAQs for more solutions.

You'll sit better

You might be uncomfortable staying in one position- even for a 15 minutes easy meditation technique.

What difference does your meditation posture make? A lot.....

Sitting slumped forward can make your back ache. Especially if you've had an injury. You can make discomfort part of the meditation.... But often it will be too distracting. And you might even not be able to finish your session.

When you sit upright your back forms an S shaped curve. This supports your weight naturally. If you slouch your back will be C shaped (the way most of us sit in front of the PC!). This puts a lot of pressure in the lower back- which can bring on pain.

So whether you're in a chair, kneeling or cross-legged sit upright. You'll feel much better for it, and your meditation will progress much more easily.
