Reducing Life Event Stress

How I Used Meditation To Reduce Life Event Stress.

I have found that when there are certain stressful events which threaten to take my peace of mind away. The more one thinks about them, the more one is affected by them.

Thoughts have their own karma. If I focus on negative events and replay them in my mind constantly I become obsessed. And it's impossible to live and enjoy life.

If the thoughts are very intrusive and persistent , one could even lose the ability to perform everyday tasks.

I've experienced this after the death of a loved one. I was plagued by persistent disturbing thoughts that made me stressed and depressed.

I found meditation to be just what I needed. It gave me instant relief from emotional pain and stress.

Obsessive Worry Thoughts

After the loss of my loved one I used to obsess about the person. How tragic the loss was. I'd constantly think about the person being able to walk and breath and laugh around me again.

I used a concentration meditation. You concentrate on a symbol, a sound or mantra. Or even just on breathing. Tuning out all other thoughts.

Tuning out other thoughts requires no effort since it will be natural result of the meditation practice and how focused the mind is.

The effects of meditation on stress can provide immediate relief. It makes me realize how a lot of suffering is a result of my own perceptions and obsessions. And how important it is to examine our thoughts before they turn into obsessions, depression and suffering.

How to Practice MIndfulness NEW
by: Mike

Hi Eddie

I think you've hit the nail right on the head. It's our thoughts that cause all the trouble. They often seem to have a life of their own don't they?

A lot of meditation tries to deal with disturbing or stressful thoughts in one way or another.

Check out How to Practice Mindfulness to find out how Jon-Kabat Zinn and Eckhart Tolle cope with thoughts.

I've also put together free scripts for mantra meditation and breathing meditation which are a really good way to get started.
