Richard Hittleman's Yoga 28 Day Exercise Plan

Richard Hittleman's Yoga 28 Day Exercise Plan is a fabulous book for anyone who wants to learn Hatha Yoga either alone or in a group setting. Why?

It teaches yoga at your pace. First, it begins simply, with movements and stretches anyone can do. The instructions offer adaptations if you cannot achieve postures when first trying them.

Then the book progresses over the course of 28 days by adding new postures and movements. The several times I have returned to this classic I spread the work over more time. I have allowed myself two or three days to learn postures and routines.

Later into the 28 days the author creates opportunities to integrate everything learned so far, and routines are varied day by day to pay attention well to each type of exercise.

This guide is also well balanced. It pays good attention to postures, breathing, and Meditation. Each day’s session includes a topic for reflection and meditation.

It is a non-judgmental book that affirms practice and gentle firmness. It is both deeply grounding and light. The instructions are readable and readily attained by anyone, with or without prior experience.

I do wish I could find the spiral-bound, workbook size edition I remember a friend once having – it lies flat, and that is much easier to deal with than the paperback edition while you are trying to practice the instructions. Nevertheless, anyone who wants a solid introduction to the exercises and meditational practices of yoga should look for a copy of Hittleman’s classic in the field. Score 8/10
