Zabuton Meditation Cushions

How Zabuton and Zafu Cushions Were the Ideal Fit For Me.

I decided to begin meditating after many years of practicing yoga - when my friends suggested meditation was a great way to end a yoga session.

I had also just picked up several lessons from a Buddhist friend, and felt like it was a good time to start.

So I began shopping online, as I knew I lacked the proper "natural padding" to meditate comfortably for as long as I'd planned.

I looked first at zabuton cushions. I found one at dharmacrafts.com in a pretty lavendar color and bought it for $79. But when I tried using it for the first time, I found myself feeling very unbalanced. My posture didn't feel quite right, and to get myself lined up I had to fold my knees underneath myself. It was still much more comfortable than my wooden floor, though.

Next time I was on the website I looked at zafu cushions and decided this might be my answer. I ordered one in the same color for $54, and received it quite quickly. It was filled with buckwheat, which smelled funny at first, but I loved it after I took some of the granules out.

My Meditation Seat

So my "meditation seat" is now a custom zafu cushion on top of the zabuton. I use it to sit on, and I am able to cross my legs in front of me lotus position.

My hands and arms fall naturally in place on my thighs and the entire experience is wonderful now. I'd recommend this set up to anyone just starting out. However I’d recommend buying them in a set. Dharmacrafts.com offers the two for $99.
